Online Learning

I have used a variety of online applications to create online classes as well as a blend of online and face-to-face classes.  The programs and types of assignments are based on class objectives and resources available.

My portfolio is separated into three sections: Classes, Websites, and Videos.

Classes

Physical Computing – Online Class Community

Description:
This was my first use of the buddypress software to create an online class community.  Each student had an account which they could customize and use to communicate with one another.  Assignments, links, and resources were posted on the website and commonly referred to during class.  Assignments included forum discussions and group blog posts.  Students said they enjoyed the social nature of the website and some even logged in on weekend to update their status and other student’s forum posts.

Arduino Physics – Sound – Online Class Community

Description:
Arduino Physics is a series of quarter long physics classes that focus on a main theme.  This first class explores sound and music through teacher led arduino projects.  The class uses a combination of video, wordpress, buddypress, and other websites to teach students about sound and how to make a tone generator.  Each student has their own account and has the ability to create blogs, groups, forums, and communicate with other students through the site.  The physics class has it’s own group where assignments are posted.  I can assign grades for each student’s work and give them feedback.
Students enjoy the facebook like abilities to communicate as well as the chance to customize their blog.  Students naturally follow one another’s progress and status on assignments and projects.  A top request was the ability to “like” their classmate’s postings.

Science Shorts – Moodle Driven Class

Description:
I used Moodle to create a quarter long science class aimed at students with little background in science.  Assignments are given in a variety of formats including online text, uploads, and forum posts.  Some assignments allowed students to interact by responding to each others answers.  Pages, links, labels, databases, and glossaries are also used to accompany assignments and make the class easier to navigate.

Websites

ScienceFor.Us – Class Website with Student Content

Description:
My main class website acts as a central location for all classes.  Class outlines, topics from the day and science questios are posted for parents and students to look through.   Science Questions from the beginning of class are posted in their own blog category and can be displayed as it’s own blog on the site.  Each class has a student “web jockey” who looks for answers to science questions as well as post the questions and their answer for everyone to look through or comment on.

Sobriety High School – School Website & Teacher Network

Description:

SHS Tech Support – Technical Support Website for Teachers

Description:
This is a newly created tech support site for teachers and staff at Sobriety High School. Anyone can find ideas for using teacher websites, links to useful software and websites, tutorials to common issues and questions, and copies of the monthly SHS Website Newsletter.  I am currently working on a simple ticketing system for teachers to submit problems and feature requests.

Videos

I have made two instructional videos for use in my Physical Computing classes.  They walk students through the process of wiring the project’s circuit, writing the code, and starting points for further experimentation.
